Hiking in the Pyrénées

The Pyrenees is western Europe's largest wilderness, stretching from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. Roussillon is on the Mediterranean side, which has the best climate wiht 300 days of sunshine per year and is known for some of the best hiking areas in Europe. Massif du Canigou offers a variety of tracks, from the most challenging hiking experience to family friendly walks. There are cool rivers and waterfalls, deep forests, rugged mountains and spectacular nature reserves, not far from the comforts of civilization.

The hiking itineraries start at our village "Le Village Catalan", at 700 metres altitude, in the spa town Vernet-les-Bains. From here you can choose short or long trips. The attractions are virtually on the doorstep. On day trips you can reach into the Pyrenees and to the top of the Canigou (2,785 metres altitude). You can return to the comforts of our village in the evenings - or how about finishing the day with a visit to the hot spa and jacuzzi, followed by a generous Catalan meal with excellent local wine.

We also offer a more basic camping based package, with accommodation in 2-man tents at our Base Camp, which is most suitable for small groups og 6 to 10 persons. The campsite is located near in Vernet-les-Bains in the foothills of the Canigou. What camping lacks in comforts, is outweighed by the adventure experience of camping in this beautiful area.

If you prefer to hike for several days away from the village, spending the night the mountains, there are several marked trails leading to chalets and cabins with various degrees of comfort (or lack of it). The Roussillon region is rich on historic and cultural attractions, and the Mediterranean is within reach.

    Hiking for Individualists (self-guided):
If you like to choose your own pace and degree of challenge, our self-guided package is the best solution. You can come with family or friends, but do not hesitate to come alone in the season you will meet others with the same interest. You only pay for the accommodation, and there is no charge for the hiking unless you require a guide. We will be glad to advise on itineraries and local information. If you prefer to be with a group, please check group dates with us. For groups a local guide can be provided (subject to additional cost).
